full description here: Face. Kayla isn't the kind of person who would consider herself beautiful, in fact, she thinks she is far from it. Although she has been told she's beautiful plenty of times, she never believes a word of it. Her skin is flawless, no freckles or blemishes. She also has a healthy glow emitting from her skin. Her eyes are bluish green in color are surrounded by thick, brown eyelashes, and stand out against her pale skin. Her nose is average in size and shape, not very small, or overly large, just the average size. Her lips are thin, cupids bow lips. They are light rose in color, and can usually be found with a smile on them.
Hair. Kayla has beautiful chestnut colored locks. They reach slightly below her shoulders and have a slight curl. She normally wears her hair down, but will pull it up whenever it gets in the way. It is soft to the touch, and has a healthy shine to it. She never really does anything to her hair, just let it dry naturally, and it always looks nice.
Body. Kayla is of average height. Standing at 5'7, and weighing 123 pounds, Kayla is your average teenage girl. Her arms and legs are proportionate to her height, and her skin is the same porcelain color as her face. On her left arm, she has a scar where she fell out of a tree and cut open her arm.
Clothing. The type of clothing Kayla wears is what your average teenage would. She likes American Eagle, Hollister, Aeropostal, and all the other stores that teenagers shop at. On any given day, she'll usually be found in jeans and a tee-shirt, nothing extravagant, but nothing too plain. When she dresses up, she really likes vintage dresses and shoes. Jewelry is usually a main point in her outfits. Accessories make the outfit, right? Well, Kayla can always be found with a necklace or bracelet that compliments her outfit.

big secret: Kayla may seem like your average, teenage bookworm, but one thing that no one knows about her is that she is recovering from anorexia. She'd been dealing with it since she was fifteen, and just finally got over it. But with all of the stress of the plane crash and everything, Kayla is really worrying about having a relapse. She doesn't want to, but she knows it's a possibility, and is making sure to the best of her ability that it doesn't happen. [/blockquote]
Personality:
Kayla could be described as your average nerd. She is very concerned with school, and she puts a lot of stock into the things that she knows. Because of that, she tries to learn everything that she can. No fact is useless, or too strange to know. Who knows, it may be that one fact that saves your life. At least that is how Kayla views it. Not knowing something is like not being up to par. She absolutely hates being asked a question and not knowing the answer to it. It makes her feel stupid and like she knows nothing. Which is not the case at all. She gets perfect marks in all her classes, and excels at basically everything she does.
Until it comes to sports. Kayla isn't really clumsy, she's just not that coordinated. The only thing that she can actually do is run. When it comes to actual sports, like baseball, or soccer, or basketball, she couldn't play to save her life. Every time she tries, she ends up injured in one way or another. But she is perfectly fine with not being able to play sports, because sports are not a marker of intelligence. Anyone can throw a ball, that is, except for Kayla. She even was able to get out of playing games in gym class, she's only allowed to walk the track, because during the first day, she got hit in the head with a soccer ball and got a concussion. So yeah, she doesn't play any sports or anything like that. But she doesn't mind, she'd rather be reading a book anyways.
Reading is the one thing that has always been constant in Kayla's life. No matter what happens in the real world, the stories in the books never change, and it always it refreshing to Kayla to be able to reread a book and it be the same as it was as before. Kayla is not really one for change, she prefers things to stay the same. But by now, she is so used to change, it's only a dream of hers for everything to the same for longer than one week.
Kayla is a really nice girl. She can't bare to hurt anyone's feelings, and always puts others feelings before her own. But she is not a very outgoing person, not liking to start conversations, but once someone gets her started talking, she could talk for hours. Having both of her parents and her step-father working full time jobs, she is pretty used to being alone, and therefore is a pretty independent person. Although she is able to do most things herself, she would never turn down help for anything, because she is smart, and not an ungrateful person.

Oceanic Record: Kayla Marie Slater was born on a sunny Spring morning in the year 1992, in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was born to two ecstatic parents, Daniel and Michelle Slater. The second child and the first daughter of the couple, she was spoiled from the minuet she was born. Both of her parents had well paying jobs, so money was never an issue for the Slater family. Her parents gave her anything she wanted, never holding back on anything they could lavish on her. Both of her parents had worked very hard to be successful. Her father's father had been an alcoholic, and he had never known his mother, so he never had much when he was younger, and he had always wanted his children to have everything he didn't. Kayla's mother's parents had died when she was eight years old in a car crash, and she had lived with her grand-parents, working hard to help provide for their family. So it was no surprise that the Slaters wanted to give their children everything they could.
Growing up, Kayla had a pretty much normal childhood. Except for the fact she was spoiled to pieces, she was just like every other child. She vied for her parents attention, but because of their jobs, they weren't always around for her when she wanted them. That's why she became so close to her brother. He knew how she felt whenever her parents came home and pretty much ignored her because of how tired they were. He knew, because he felt the same way. Her brother became her best friend, they always did everything together.
Starting school, she didn't really make any friends. She went to a private school, and all of the kids were pretty stuck up for their age. Despite being spoiled, Kayla wasn't stuck up. She was smart enough to know that she had lucked into that life, and she didn't really deserve anything she got. So instead of making friends, she reatreated into books. It wasn't that she was unfriendly or anything, it's just the kids were cruel and merciless, and Kayla really didn't want to be a part of that. Their family life at home was also steadily declining. Her parents were beginning to fight, nothing major, just more often then they should, and Kayla used books to forget about all of that. Because of all her reading, Kayla became very intelligent, knowing much more than most of the other kids in her school.
When Kayla was seven, her whole world was turned upside down. Her parents got a divorce, and her mother took her with her to Chicago, Illinois. This was really hard on Kayla, because Kyle and Kayla were seperated. Kyle stayed with their dad in Pittsburgh, while Kayla's mom took her to Chicago. Kayla was so upset with her mother for making her move, she didn't talk to her for an entire month. But that didn't seem to have much effect on her mother, seeing as she was already dating again, and it was pretty serious. Within three months of the divorce, her mom was engaged. Apparently her mother had been seeing Michael Karl before the divorce. This made Kayla very upset at her mother, and even so at the man who was to be her new step-father. But being only seven years of age, there was nothing that she could do about it.
Disliking her step-dad from the start, she never really gave him a chance. He was never really around though, so she was pretty much alright with it. Until her mom announced she was pregnant. Kayla was eight years old, it had only been a year since the divorce, and she was barely ready for a new father, let alone a new sibling. But she had to adjust when little Elizabeth Rose Karl came into the world. Kayla was thrilled that she had a sister, and not a brother. She already had the best brother on the face of the earth, and didn't need anyone trying to replace him too.
After Elizabeth was born, Kayla started getting used to living in Chicago with her new family. At her new school, she made friends, and excelled in her classes. She spent as much time with her friends as she could, and spent all the other time reading books, just enjoying her childhood. As she got older, she continued to excel at school, finding her calling in science, particuarly chemistry. She loved putting things together to make something completely different, and she also liked computing formulas. That's how she learned about the oceanography camp in Austrailia. Her science teacher told her about it and said she would be a great candidate for it. So she talked to her mother about it, and she thought it was a great idea.
Jane looked out onto the empty track and field. It was a beautiful day outside, and it surprised her that no one was out there. Setting her bag down on the bleachers, she sat down beside it. Slipping off her regular shoes, she pulled out her cleats. They were worn and she really needed new ones, but they were her lucky cleats, and she could never part with them. Pulling her feet up onto the bleacher, she tied the laces of the cleats. Reaching into her bag, she grabbed her soccer ball and threw it onto the field. She took her camera from around her neck and stuck it into her bag. The only time Jane didn't have a camera was when she was playing soccer. She reached one last time into her bag and produced her iPod.
Sticking the ear buds into her ears, she turned it on. Lady GaGa's song, "Just Dance" came blaring into her ears as she ran out onto the soccer field. She loved the feeling of her legs pounding against the earth as she ran. Reaching the soccer ball, she began to dribble it down the field towards the goal. Without someone else, soccer was way too easy, but Jane enjoyed it just the same. It was such a great escape from the everyday pressure of school and everything else that came along with being a teenager. The sun was warm across her face as she ran along the field. California had to be one of her favorite places in the world because of the heat. It was hardly ever cold, and Jane absolutely hated being cold. Jane couldn't believe that she was the captain of the soccer team this year. She was so excited, but then again, it made her extremely nervous. All the pressure to take the team to victory.
Practice, practice, practice. That was the only way that she would feel she deserved the spot of captain. She had worked very hard to do as well as she does in soccer. But now more than ever, she felt pressured to do her best, and make everyone else do their best. Most people wouldn't be able to handle the pressure, but Jane knew she could. She had received constant pressure her entire life from her parents to do well, and she had gotten used to it. Bringing herself back to reality, she stopped the ball and looked around. The sun was shining brightly in the sky, and there were no clouds to be seen. She took a deep breath, enjoying the nice weather.
Turning toward the goal, she noticed she was closer to it than she had thought. Taking one single kick, she kicked the ball into the goal. It was nice to make a goal without really having to put much effort into it. Not really wanting to go get the ball, she plopped down to the ground. The grass was soft as she lay down upon the ground and looked up at the endless blue sky.
